Buying Chikankari: Read the Embroidery and the Fabric Separately

The embroidery name does not name the whole garment

A chikankari kurta has at least two things to understand: the embroidery and the fabric that carries it. A beautiful front photograph may show the pattern clearly while saying little about transparency, lining or fit. Those questions matter when buying clothes from abroad.

Incredible India’s Lucknow craft account describes chikankari as a hand-embroidery tradition associated with the city, with flat, raised and net-like stitch effects. It discusses several base fabrics and a history of white work. That does not mean every modern garment bearing the name has the same fibre or construction.

Read a listing in layers

Start with the fabric composition and the garment measurements. Next, check the embroidery description: does the seller identify hand work, machine work or a combination? Then look for lining, included inner pieces, closure details and care instructions. A style name is not proof of any of these.

Compare the measurements with a garment that already fits rather than relying on a familiar size letter. Look at the sleeve, side seams and hem as well as the decorated front. If the base is sheer, decide how you intend to wear it before ordering an additional inner garment.

Ask for details that photographs cannot supply

A close-up can help you see texture, but it cannot establish fibre composition or the place where work was done. Ask for those facts directly if they affect the purchase. Likewise, keep an origin story separate from documented maker information. An attractive legend is not evidence about a particular kurta.

Once the garment arrives, retain its care label. Embroidery thread, base cloth and any embellishment may require attention together. Use the supplier’s care directions for the actual piece rather than a blanket instruction for everything called chikankari. This approach values the craft while making the online purchase more predictable.

Lalkila.com’s Chikankari Kurtas collection is a direct starting point for this comparison. If adding a dupatta, check its dimensions, fibre and care separately so the complete outfit works for the way you plan to wear it.
