Choosing an everyday cotton kurta: fit fabric and care

Lalkila articles · Shopping guides · Clothing

Start with a garment that fits

An everyday kurta needs to work while sitting, reaching and moving, not only in a product photograph. Before ordering, choose a similar garment you already like. Measure it flat using the seller's stated method, then compare those measurements with the specific product's chart.

Check whether a chart gives body measurements or finished garment measurements. They are not interchangeable. Note the chest, shoulder, sleeve and overall length, and consider where side slits begin. A familiar size letter from another brand is only a starting point.

Read fibre and care information together

A category labelled cotton does not replace the composition information for an individual garment. Check whether the item is described as pure cotton or a blend, and whether a lining, trim or decoration has separate details. Do not infer handloom production, embroidery technique or certification from appearance alone.

The US Federal Trade Commission's apparel information distinguishes fibre identification from care instructions. Its care-label guidance explains that care covers washing or cleaning and associated directions. For your own purchase, follow the actual garment's label rather than a general rule for all cotton clothing.

Think about the week it will serve

Consider your normal laundry arrangements, climate, travel and available ironing time. An item needing specialist care may suit an occasional event but be inconvenient for a weekday wardrobe. Ask for missing care details before assuming a decorated garment can go into the same wash as a plain cotton shirt.

Check what is included in the listing: a kurta alone, or a set with trousers or dupatta. Review the current return terms and delivery eligibility before checkout. When it arrives, compare fit and contents promptly while keeping labels attached until you decide whether to retain it. An outfit that fits your routine is more useful than one chosen only for an imagined occasion.
