Looking at Gond Painting: Keep Jangarh Singh Shyam’s Name on the Label

An artist is more specific than a category

A label saying only “tribal art” withholds information a viewer needs. Who made the work? What is its title, date and medium? Which information comes from the artist and which was assigned later by a collector or museum?

The Museum of Art & Photography’s record PTG.00837 gives a useful example. It credits Jangarh Singh Shyam, classifies the work as Gond Painting and dates it to the mid-1980s. The assigned title is The Story of the Tiger and the Boar. The medium is acrylic on canvas, with dimensions of 130 by 90 centimetres.

Read each part of the label on its own terms

“Gond Painting” identifies a classification; it does not replace the named artist. “Acrylic on canvas” tells us something concrete about this work’s materials. An assigned title should be described as assigned rather than presented as a quotation from the artist.

A useful viewing exercise is to read the picture first and then the catalogue. Record what you can actually see separately from what you have learned from the museum. Resist inventing a sacred meaning for every shape or assuming that a broad community label explains every artist’s intentions.

Ask better questions when buying art

Request the artist’s name, medium, dimensions and whether the listing concerns an original, a reproduction or another kind of object. Ask how the seller obtained it and whether the maker’s credit will accompany the purchase. A printed decorative item and an original painting require different descriptions.

For children learning abroad, make a small label for their own artwork too: name, title, materials and year. It is a simple exercise in understanding authorship. Learning about an artist need not mean copying their distinctive imagery or presenting a new imitation as community art.
