Godrej’s Typewriters: Reading Indian Brand History Through an Archive

Look for a dated object and a dated document
Godrej Archives’ September 2023 document feature dates the M-9 typewriter launch to 1955. It then discusses a sales letter of 14 September 1965 concerning the M-12 and competition with Remington. The feature describes technical improvement, manufacturing capacity and sales work as parts of that history.
These are more useful starting points than an undated claim that a familiar brand was always everywhere. The archive gives the reader a named model and a particular document to investigate.
Separate the maker’s account from your family’s memory
A corporate archive is a primary source for its records and for how a company presents its past. Read it with that role in mind. A sales letter is trying to persuade its audience; its existence is evidence of a business strategy, not independent proof that every product claim was correct.
If a relative remembers typing classes or an office machine, ask which model, workplace and approximate year. Photograph a model plate if available without exposing private papers. Keep the recollection beside the archival timeline rather than changing either one to make them fit.
Build a small history of an everyday object
Choose one object and collect its model information, a dated catalogue or archive reference and an account of how it was used. Note what remains unknown. Who bought it, who maintained it and who learned to work with it can be different questions.
An unbranded typewriter illustration can suggest the subject, but cannot identify an M-9 or reproduce a museum object. Likewise, recognising a company name on an unrelated modern product does not establish that it has the same history, specifications or manufacturing origin as an older machine.
