A First-Kitchen Plan for Indian Students in Germany

Check the kitchen before filling a suitcase

A new student kitchen starts with the room you actually have. Before buying cookware, ask the residence or landlord what is supplied, whether the hob is induction, how much fridge space is shared and where utensils can be stored. A favourite large pan is little help if there is no suitable hob or cupboard.

Germany's official arrival and study-planning guide points students towards halls of residence, student services and the university International Office. Use those channels for housing and arrival questions. For the kitchen itself, request an inventory or clear photographs before spending money.

Build around meals you will cook

Choose three repeatable meals before writing a shopping list. For example, one dal-and-rice meal, one egg or vegetable meal, and one pasta or soup meal share a manageable set of tools. Check your own dietary needs rather than copying another student's pantry.

Start with a saucepan, a frying pan if needed, a knife, board, spoon and food container. Add equipment after you see what is already communal. For ingredients, buy small amounts of the spices you actually use; a large assortment can consume both money and shelf space without making dinner easier.

Agree how the shared kitchen works

Discuss shelf labels, cleaning, visitors, cooking times and allergen cross-contact with the people sharing the space. Separate containers or utensils may matter to someone for religious, dietary or allergy reasons. Ask directly and describe your own needs without assuming everyone from India follows the same practices.

Keep an initial food budget in local prices and review it after the first few shopping trips. Check grocery opening hours and make a backup meal from what is already in the cupboard. Use official university guidance for enrolment and administrative requirements; a pantry article should not substitute for those instructions.
