A Durga Puja celebration can be approached through worship, art, music, family or community life. Those aspects may overlap, but a visitor does not need to pretend they are interchangeable.
UNESCO's Durga Puja in Kolkata resource records its 2021 inscription on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. It describes clay sculpture, installations, drumming and the idea of homecoming. The recognition is for the named heritage element, not a blanket certification of every event, product or image using the words Durga Puja.
Let each event explain itself
A gathering abroad may use a different venue and timetable from a celebration in Kolkata. Consult the actual organiser for visiting arrangements, prayer times, performances, meals and accessibility. Do not reuse a date from an old article or assume a weekend programme matches the ritual calendar exactly.
If attending for the first time, ask where visitors should enter and whether any parts of the programme require registration. For clothing or gifts, start with the event and the recipient rather than a rule that everyone must wear one garment or bring one object. Comfort, venue conditions and individual preference all matter. A meaningful celebration can hold devotion and artistic enjoyment together while leaving people room to participate differently.
