Cardamom pods seeds and powder: match the recipe's measure
Lalkila articles · Shopping guides · Spices
The form is part of the ingredient
A recipe calling for two cardamom pods has not asked for two teaspoons of ground cardamom. The outer capsule, the seeds inside it and a ground product are different forms to measure and handle.
The Spices Board's small-cardamom description identifies the commercial spice as dried fruit capsules. For a retail purchase, check what the packet actually contains. A product name alone may not tell you whether a powder includes only seeds or a different ground form.
Use the method to resolve the shopping question
A whole pod may be lightly crushed for an infusion or cooked with rice and removed before eating. A recipe asking for ground seeds expects a different texture. Read the method before buying, and keep whole spices visible enough to remove when appropriate.
If a recipe is unclear about its form or quantity, do not assume all forms convert spoon for spoon. Consult the author or choose a clearer recipe. A small change in a strong aromatic can alter a dessert substantially, and adding more later is not the same as being able to take it out.
Make a useful kitchen note
Write the form next to the amount in your own recipe notebook: whole pods, seeds or powder. If you grind seeds yourself, record how you measured them. This is especially helpful when sharing a recipe across households whose measuring habits differ.
Check that the packet is the type your recipe names; this guide concerns small cardamom and does not treat every cardamom product as interchangeable. Keep the spice closed, dry and identified, following its storage instructions. A modest pack that you use regularly can be more practical than a large quantity bought without a plan. In a shared cupboard, a precise label saves the next cook from having to guess what is inside the jar.
